“Mu (Liminal Spaces)”
“Mu” relates to that intangible space ‘between’, between here and there, between you
and me, between the inner and outer ‘me’.
This project is one of three that I have worked on with my favourite model, my youngest
child Morgan. Like the rest of us, our children face profound issues regarding our sense
of identity. Unlike most of us (adults), children have an incredible knack for exploring
those issues openly and honestly. Although we were not entirely sure where our joint
exploration would take us in this project, it was clear from the outset that it had to
involve the exploration – and visualization – of the profound sense of inner duality that
we all tend to feel when we confront identity issues.
In this series we chose to explore this sense both literally and metaphorically through
the use of double/multiple exposures. Each image thus involved – again, both literally
and metaphorically – the ‘composition’ of questions of identity. One surprise, for me at
least, was that although this expression of questioning identity focused on my model,
they resonated deeply within me as well. Our hope is that you will find as much
challenge, frustration, and satisfaction in interacting with these images as we found in

Ron Crawford’s amazing painting “Once Upon A Time” a 8.5 foot by 12.5 foot painting is a public work displayed at the Salt Spring Island public Library. This work is hanging in the lobby of the library and can not be missed. If one looks really close at this work they can find the opening lines of great fictional novels.
Here is the audio clip of Ron explaining his work. This was taped in the spring of 2013 on Salt Spring. Ron’s chat refers to the photos of his work that were shot by Salt Spring photographer David Borrowman.
This is an audio clip Ron did at a show he had in Merchant mews in Jan 2013
